Published biweekly, Der Adler, meaning “The Eagle”, was a Nazi propaganda magazine intended for Luftwaffe servicemen. First published by the Scherl Verlag on the 1st of March 1939, it ran until its final issue on the 12th of September 1944, publishing a total of 146 issues. The magazine had the support of the Luftwaffe High Command. After the Battle of Britain, the Luftwaffe focused articles on its ground forces, predominantly the Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers.) The magazine also occasionally featured a page of cartoons. Alongside the articles were large illustrations and photographs. Several the articles in the earlier issues featured Fraktur type until it was banned under the Schrifterlass edict in 1941, when it then ceases to feature in the magazine.
